2 Keys To a Successful 2010

A new year is upon us. As they say, out with the old, in with the new. I for one am not big into New Years resolutions. Seems trivial to me, to wait for a certain date on the calendar to make a necessary change. If a change is needed, there’s no better time to start than now.

That being said, a new calendar year does have it’s advantages, especially in business. Budgets open up, spending holds are removed and the financials are given a fresh set of books.

In spite of the current economic downturn, many people are looking to 2010 with an added oomph of enthusiasm. As I see it, there are 2 keys to unlocking a successful 2010:

Key #1: Be Willing To Help Others

It’s important to realize that everyone is unique. Different outlooks and experiences differentiate us all. As people struggle to move forward in the new year, be willing to share your talents with those around you. Maybe in the past, you’ve been overly guarded for fear of letting the competition get one up on you. Or maybe, you don’t think you have much to offer? Look around you. Be willing to help others who need assistance. Your willingness to help others could be key to establishing long lasting relationships.

Key #2: Be Willing To Ask For And Receive Help From Others

This can be a tough one. All too often people want others to see them as an “expert” who has all the answers. Allowing people to see that we’re not perfect brings a sense of vulnerability we would rather not experience. I’ve always believed that when you hang your shingle out for business, you are telling the world that you  are the go to person that will meet their specific needs. Though this needs to be true from a customer point of view, we need to realize ourselves that we don’t have all the answers. By being willing to collaborate with others, we promote ourselves to success that we would otherwise not obtain, or would take too long winging it on our own. By asking for and being willing to receive the help of others, we accelerate our personal learning, and strengthen relationships in the process.

Optimism and a fresh start won’t be enough to move us all forward. It will take a lot of hard work and a fair amount of trial and error. But with the right motives, proper tools and  ”Can Do” determination, I think 2010 can be a banner year. So, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work. Who can you help today?
